Nutrition Advisory Councils (NAC's) are student-based focus groups that enhance the wellness environment on campus by promoting healthy eating habits and physical activity in addition to demonstrating how school meal programs contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
3 Fundamental Functions of a NAC:
1. Develop peer-to-peer marketing to promote healthy foods and beverages in cooperation with the school nutrition program.
2. Conduct peer-to-peer nutrition education on the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity.
3. Sample and implement new menu items in cooperation with Child Nutrition Services.
The NAC Program Includes:
At least one teacher and students from each elementary school site who serve as members of Team NAC.
Monthly nutrition lessons that are aligned with California content standards and focus on MyPlate, healthy eating, and physical activity.
Monthly tastings that introduce new school foods and recipes to students.
Marketing and data collection projects that serve to increase student awareness of the variety of nutritious foods offered at school as well as the importance of making healthy choices.
