6th Grade Students Are Taking Action!
Coat Drive for Syrian Refugee Children
We want to help refugee children who are trying to escape war & terrorism & we need your help! We are doing a coat drive to send coats to Syrian refugee children to keep them warn during the extremely cold winter months. We are collecting clean, gently used coats or new coats in all sizes (infants-adult) to give to children of all ages. Please join us in taking action to support this humanitarian crisis. You can drop off coats in the Alvin Dunn office or have your child bring it to room 36. In addition to the coat drive, we have also created a fundraiser to raise money that will go towards food, clean water, emergency supplies, basic health care & education, & safe places to play for kids. Mathematicians in the house!
An inquiry into Surface Area-Mathematicians Rock! Common Core mathematics requires a balanced approach to math which includes procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, and real-world application. Our 6th grade students kicked off our geometry unit with an application problem involving our lovely assistant principal Mrs. Obrist. Students asked "How much foil would it take to cover Mrs. Obrist's office? What is the surface area of her office? How much much would it cost to pull off this prank?" Special thanks to Mrs. Obrist for being such a great sport and supporting our students' inquiry, motivation, and meaning in mathematics!
We had an amazing 6th Grade Health Fair!
An inquiry into architecture: Students become architects and build geodesic domes from newspaper and tape.
Students were inspired by cainesarcade.com and took the Cardboard Box Challenge! Fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students created an arcade out of cardboard box games. They expressed their creativity and innovative design for the enjoyment of all grade levels.
