I believe all students can be successful in math. There is no “math gene” without which a person cannot grasp mathematical concepts. Math skills are skills like any other (think soccer or guitar); diligence and hard work are necessary to become proficient. No one expects to be able to play a song on a guitar with no understanding of the chords and no practice. Similarly, no one should think they will be able to apply mathematics to solve problems without understanding concepts and without practice. To be successful in my class students will need to come prepared with an open mind and an attitude which allows them to be receptive to new ideas. In addition to the course content, there will be a focus on the Standards for Mathematical Practice listed below in order to help students become the best critically thinking problem solvers they can be.
I look forward to a great year! Please feel free to contact me with any questions!

    Standards for Mathematical Practice:

    1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
    2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
    3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
    4. Model with mathematics.
    5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
    6. Attend to precision.
    7. Look for and make use of structure.
    8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
