Mrs. Nancy Hayashi
I am excited to join the SMHS team. I have taught for over twenty years and still going strong. I was born and raised in the diverse community of Oceanside, California. I knew at a young age that I wanted to teach and what it means to be resilient during difficult times. I am honored to teach, mentor and hopefully inspire many students to reach their academic potential by being resilient, intentional and confident. I am returning to the classroom after two years representing SMUSD as a Distinguished Teacher in Residence at CSUSM. During that time, I worked with future teachers and had time to reflect upon my core educational values. Some of theses values include: improving equity and access for all students, to look at technology as a tool for enhancing educational experiences, and research into effective instructional practices.
Personally, I live in Encinitas with my husband, daughter Maya (10) and son Henry (6). My first calling to teach history was when I was in kinder, I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark at a drive-in theater. I have traveled a bit and have been on some adventures of my own, but in reality I enjoy a good book and a cup of hot tea over mosquitos or quicksand. I continue to learn from others' cultural stories, especially from my students and their families. In my culture, hospitality includes an open door, conversation and good food. In keeping with tradition, my door is always open to you. Please do not hesitate in reaching out to me to discuss progress or to share personal stories so that I can better serve you.
