Originally from Alexandria, Virginia, Dr. Betsy Kannenberg moved to California in 2001 where she began teaching special education in South Bay Union School District. She moved into Solana Beach School District in 2005, where she worked as a special education and intervention teacher, new teacher support provider, and summer school principal.
Dr. Kannenberg joined San Marcos Unified School District in 2012, as assistant principal of Carrillo Elementary. In 2014, she became principal of Carrillo Elementary, and completed her doctorate in Educational Leadership, focusing on the areas of program evaluation and teacher professional development.

The Special Programs Department is responsible for distribution and management of categorically funded state and federal programs, such as Title I, Title III, LCAP, ASES, ASSETS, Parental Involvement, English learner summer school, and Federal Program Monitoring.
