With nearly 30 years in education, Melissa Hunt began her career as an English and History teacher. After becoming an administrator in the greater Los Angeles area, she moved to San Diego to become the principal of Woodland Park Middle School from 2001 to 2006. San Marcos Unified "loaned" her to the San Diego County Office of Education to provide professional development for school leaders throughout the county. She returned to the district in 2011 to become the principal of San Marcos Middle School.In her most recent role as Director of Secondary Education, she worked closely with administrators and teachers to ensure quality teaching. Appointed by the SMUSD Governing Board, Mrs. Hunt moves forward in her role as Superintendent working to ensure equity and access for all students.
The Superintendent's Office oversees all divisions within the District, including Business Services, Instructional Services, and Human Resources and Development. As Superintendent, Mrs. Hunt is the District's Chief Instructional Leader and the Secretary to the Governing Board. Her role is to carry out the policy decisions and planning initiatives of the Governing Board. Her other duties include:
- Supervision of the District's 19 schools
- Hiring and evaluation of the school principals
- Oversight of the District's budget and facilities
- Serving as the District's chief spokesperson and liaison to the cities of San Marcos, Carlsbad, and Vista, Palomar College, California State University of San Marcos, the San Diego County Office of Education, parent groups, service clubs, business organizations, and the media
