Dr. Holt Announces His Retirement
San Marcos, CA— On Friday, December 16th, Dr. Kevin Holt announced that, after fourteen years with the San Marcos Unified School District, he will be retiring as of June 2017.
“I have had the distinct pleasure of working with many talented people in this district who have given birth to new ideas, faced down obstacles, persevered through challenges, and made San Marcos Unified one of the very best school districts in our state,” Dr. Holt reminisced fondly. “Together we have built Joli Ann, Double Peak, re-invented San Marcos High and San Marcos Elementary, invested in arts instruction, provided endless opportunities for professional growth, and dedicated ourselves to making equity and access a priority and reality for all of our students.“
Dr. Holt led the district successfully through the worst fiscal crisis faced by San Marcos Unified, and dedicated himself to building a culture that focused on positive relationships between every stakeholder.
“He has led our district with an approachable, relational style that has made him beloved by staff, students, parents and the community at large. Dr. Holt’s “students first” philosophy kept us all focused on our common mission,” stated Pam Lindamood, SMUSD’s Governing Board President.
In his eleven years as Superintendent, SMUSD has been recognized by Ed Trust West as being in the top seven most successful large unified school districts in the state in closing the achievement gap. He has proudly overseen our schools being honored as Innovative Classroom of the Future, Blue Ribbon Schools, Gold Ribbon Schools, California Distinguished Schools, as well as receive Golden Bell Awards.
Michael DeVries, San Marcos Educators Association President, remarked, “Kevin has been the leader of this district for over a decade and San Marcos Unified has shown tremendous progress and growth with him at the helm. Always a visionary, Kevin has never been afraid to shoot for the stars if he thought it was in the best interest of our students.”
A leader dedicated to creating a learning environment where everyone could thrive, Dr. Holt co-chaired the County Office of Education’s Achievement Gap Task Force and was instrumental in bringing about the formation of The San Marcos Promise Foundation. Through scholarships now offered by The San Marcos Promise, SMUSD is sending a clear message to students that, if they work hard and dream big, there will be financial support to aspire and achieve whatever it is they choose to be.
In a heartfelt, holiday message to all SMUSD employees, Dr. Holt expressed his hope to be remembered as being steadfast in his commitment to students, as well as having ensured that being complacent was never an option. Emotional sentiments expressed after his announcement indicated that Dr. Holt’s hopes are not in vain. His unparalleled commitment and dedication to SMUSD students and their futures have been followed by action, and not just words.
San Marcos Unified is grateful for Dr. Holt’s years of service, and wishes him well in the next chapter of his life. In discussing his retirement with district staff, Dr. Holt expressed his plans of spending a great deal of time with his children and grandchildren.
According to the Superintendent’s office, SMUSD’s Governing Board will send a message next week to all staff regarding the next steps in hiring a new Superintendent.
