A message from the Superintendent: Warning of Rainbow Fentanyl

Dear SMUSD Families,
I am so thrilled that the start of this 2022-23 school year has been full of enthusiasm from both staff and students. While we remain excited for the year ahead, we are also aware of the dangerous epidemic around fentanyl that has made its way to our San Diego community. While we have not experienced this issue at any of our campuses here in San Marcos Unified, in an effort to be proactive and emphasize prevention, I want to share the following update with you.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Recently, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) have released warnings of an emerging trend of new brightly-colored fentanyl, dubbed “Rainbow Fentanyl,” which is made to look like candy to children and young people.
In response to this trend throughout our county, below are some steps we have taken and recommendations for parents/guardians:
Education Events - We have been hosting regular virtual events with dynamic speaker and former DEA agent, Rocky Herron, who outlines what every student and parent needs to know. We are grateful for the parent engagement and strong turnout at our last event, and are currently working on future dates.

We will also be participating in an upcoming in-person event on October 12th at One Safe Place here in San Marcos, in partnership with our District Attorney, Summer Stephan, and County Supervisor, Jim Desmond. We invite you to attend, learn more, and get valuable resources.

Red Ribbon Week - We are grateful for the strong and long standing partnership between SMUSD and the San Marcos Prevention Coalition. In collaboration, they have been working with our students for years to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. This outreach includes direct programming in our schools including afterschool programs, peer-to-peer outreach and education, leadership conferences, and an upcoming Red Ribbon Week Proclamation with our students at the San Marcos City Council meeting.
Ahead of Halloween - With Halloween just several weeks away, should you partake in trick-or-treating, I want to encourage you to check your student's candy as fentanyl can be found in many forms, including pills, powder, and blocks that can resemble sidewalk chalk or candy, in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes.

Narcan - The CDPH has made Narcan, a life-saving medication used to reverse an opioid overdose, available at no-cost to California school districts. At the recommendation of the San Diego County Office of Education, SMUSD has requested and received Narcan at all of our school sites, and have trained staff to administer it should the need arise. While my hope is that this day will never come here at SMUSD, the reality is that our commitment to keeping students and staff safe includes these measures.
Talk To Your Student - While we can take action here at SMUSD, I encourage you to please speak with your student about the very real dangers of substance abuse, and specifically the dangers of fentanyl. The DEA states persons aged 12 and older who misused a prescription pain reliever in the past year, over 40 percent got the pain reliever from a friend or relative for free. Experts state a large number of young people did not know they were ingesting fentanyl, but thought they had legitimate medication.

Si bien no hemos experimentado este problema en ninguno de nuestros campus aquí en el Distrito Unificado de San Marcos, en un esfuerzo por ser proactivos y enfatizar la prevención, quiero compartir la siguiente actualización con ustedes.
El fentanilo es un opioide sintético que es 50 veces más fuerte que la heroína y 100 veces más fuerte que la morfina. Recientemente, el Departamento de Salud Pública de California (CDPH) y el Agencia de Control de Drogas (DEA) han publicado advertencias sobre una tendencia emergente de nuevo fentanilo de colores brillantes, denominado "Rainbow Fentanyl", que se hace para que parezca un caramelo para niños y jóvenes.

Semana del Listón Rojo - Estamos agradecidos por la asociación fuerte y duradera entre SMUSD y la Coalición de Prevención de San Marcos. En colaboración, han estado trabajando con nuestros estudiantes durante años para celebrar la Semana del Listón Rojo. Este alcance incluye programación directa en nuestras escuelas, incluidos programas extracurriculares, alcance y educación entre pares, conferencias de liderazgo y una próxima Proclamación de la Semana del Listón Rojo con nuestros estudiantes en la reunión del Concejo Municipal de San Marcos.

Narcan - El CDPH ha hecho que Narcan, un medicamento que salva vidas y se usa para revertir una sobredosis de opioides, esté disponible sin costo para los distritos escolares de California. Hable con su estudiante - Si bien podemos tomar medidas aquí en SMUSD, lo animo a que hable con su estudiante sobre los peligros reales del abuso de sustancias y, específicamente, los peligros del fentanilo. La DEA afirma las personas de 12 años o más que abusaron de un analgésico recetado en el último año, más del 40 por ciento obtuvo el analgésico de un amigo o familiar de forma gratuita. Los expertos afirman que una gran cantidad de jóvenes no sabían que estaban ingiriendo fentanilo, pero pensaron que tenían medicamentos legítimos.
