Technical Support:

  • A technician from the Technology Department should set up your computer for you with the basic applications you need. He will also set up your email account, and configure files in your Documents Folder to be backed up to the school's server. He can also make sure that any student computers in your classroom are ready for use.
  • If you are having trouble with your computer, student computers, or printers, please contact your site rep and have them submit a Tech Request. To help speed resolution of the problem, please do the following before submitting a request.
  1. Check all connections (power, network, printer cables, etc.) and make sure all power strips used are plugged in and switched on.
  2. Check with a colleague to determine if the problem is isolated to your equipment or is a larger problem.
  3. Restart your computer, log back in and check to see if the problem persists.

Ethical Computer Use:

  • Staff and Student Responsible Use Policies (RUPs) are traditionally included in the Parent Information Packet, but check with your Office Manager to be sure.
  • Privacy: All computer use at school and/or through the district servers and email system should be for work related purposes and should not be considered private.
  • Content Filters: To comply with federal E-Rate regulations, SMUSD employs a content filter on all web access. Filtering can result in some good sites being blocked. Please direct requests to "unblock" a website to the Technology Department through your principal.
  • Legal Requirements: As mentioned above, the Technology Department is required to filter email content. This too will sometimes block email from commercial senders or others due to the content of their message. If you would like to manage your own white-listing and black-listing of email, follow this link for directions.
  • Children's Online Protection Act (COPA): Regulates what can be shared with minors on the World Wide Web. This together with E-Rate and CIPA regulations (See below) requires the district and its personnel to limit and carefully monitor Internet use by students.
    • From the COPA rules: MATERIAL THAT IS HARMFUL TO MINORS: The term material that is harmful to minors means any communication, picture, image, graphic image file, article, recording, writing, or other matter of any kind that is obscene or that:
    • (A) the average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find, taking the material as a whole and with respect to minors, is designed to appeal to, or is designed to pander to, the prurient interest;
    • (B) depicts, describes, or represents, in a manner patently offensive with respect to minors, an actual or simulated sexual act or sexual contact, an actual or simulated normal or perverted sexual act, or a lewd exhibition of the ; and
    • (C) taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for minors.
    • (7) MINOR: The term 'minor' means any person under 17 years of age.
  • Children's Internet Protection Act
    • What CIPA Requires:
    • Schools and libraries subject to CIPA may not receive the discounts offered by the E-rate program unless they certify that they have an Internet safety policy and technology protection measures in place. An Internet safety policy must include technology protection measures to block or filter Internet access to pictures that: (a) are obscene, (b) are child pornography, or (c) are harmful to minors (for computers that are accessed by minors).
    • Schools subject to CIPA are required to adopt and enforce a policy to monitor online activities of minors.
    • Schools and libraries subject to CIPA are required to adopt and implement a policy addressing: (a) access by minors to inappropriate matter on the Internet; (b) the safety and security of minors when using electronic mail, chat rooms, and other forms of direct electronic communications; (c) unauthorized access, including so-called "hacking," and other unlawful activities by minors online; (d) unauthorized disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal information regarding minors; and (e) restricting minors' access to materials harmful to them.
