San Marcos Unified School District Employees Recognized as 2026 ACSA Region 18 Award Recipients

San Marcos, CA — San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD) is proud to announce that two district employees have been selected as 2026 Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 18 Award Recipients, recognizing their exceptional service, leadership, and impact on students and school communities.
Mara McLeod, Assistant Principal at San Elijo Elementary School, has been named Elementary Co-Administrator of the Year, and Michael Sawyer, Executive Director of Transportation, has been named Classified Leader of the Year.
Both honorees will be formally recognized alongside other Region 18 award recipients at the 24th Annual Evening of the Stars Honoring Our Own Awards on April 25, 2026. The event is hosted by the San Diego County School Boards Association in partnership with the Association of California School Administrators.
Mara McLeod was selected for her strong commitment to equitable education, inclusive school practices, and student achievement. As an assistant principal, she has led the implementation of systems that support academic success, positive school climate, and student well-being. Known for her collaborative approach, McLeod works closely with staff to strengthen instruction, support diverse learners, and foster safe and welcoming learning environments where all students feel connected and supported.
Michael Sawyer was recognized for his outstanding leadership in classified services and his long-standing impact on student access and safety. Beginning his career as a bus driver, Sawyer has led the district’s transportation department through significant growth and innovation. Under his leadership, transportation services have expanded regionally, strengthened access for students with specialized needs, improved reliability and attendance, and advanced sustainability efforts through major clean transportation initiatives. His work has positioned transportation as a critical partner in student success and district operations.
