Drone Use at San Marcos Unified School District

San Marcos Unified School District recognizes that drones can be powerful and engaging instructional tools across a variety of learning environments. To ensure safe, responsible, and legally compliant use, all drone operations within the District must follow applicable Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and District guidelines.

SMUSD has developed detailed Drone Use Operation Instructions for both Indoor Drone Flight and Outdoor Drone Flight. These documents outline required safety practices, regulatory responsibilities, and approval steps for staff.

All teachers and school site personnel interested in purchasing a drone or using a drone for instructional purposes must review and follow the appropriate operational instructions.
