SARB

The School Attendance Review Board (SARB) was established by the California legislature in 1975 for the purposes of making a better effort to meet the needs of students with attendance and/or behavior problems and promoting the use of alternatives to the juvenile court system. SARB seeks to understand why students are experiencing attendance and/or behavior problems, and serves as a vehicle to correct those problems when existing school and community resources have been exhausted. SARB is specifically charged with finding solutions to unresolved student attendance and discipline problems by bringing together, on a regular basis, representatives of the multiple agencies that make up the SARB panel. SARB panel members may include Healthy Start Family Resource Centers, Foster Youth staff, and representatives from the Department of Human Assistance, Child Protective Services, the County Office of Education, Probation, and other law enforcement agencies, such as Sheriffs, Police and the District Attorney's Office.

Dear Parent,

The community of San Marcos School District recognizes the positive impact that regular student attendance has on student achievement, and we remain committed in our efforts to promote student achievement.

A recent law changed the way schools receive state funding. It is important that you understand this law and support our efforts to increase attendance so that our schools will not lose a large amount of annual funding.

Schools no longer receive money for excused absences. Schools now only receive funding for students who are actually in class. Every day a student misses school, even for excused absences, the school loses about $45.00 in income, the equivalent of about 2 library books. We ask that you support our efforts to increase student attendance by:

  • Planning your family vacations during the summer or school holidays.
  • Try to schedule doctor appointments for your child after school hours, or on late start or early release days.
  • When your child has a doctor's appointment in the middle of the school day, bring him/her to school before or after the appointment.
  • Allow your child to stay home only when he/she has a contagious illness or is too sick to be comfortable at school.

Remember, too, that good student attendance not only benefits our school, but it also benefits your child. Every day a student misses school, he gets more than two days behind his peers because he must make up missed learning and catch up with new learning at the same time. Every day a student is in school, he/she raise his/her chances to score well on tests. Attendance is very important for achieving academic success, and we need the support of all our parents.

We know that you want the very best for your child, and we do too. Please contact your school's principal if you have any questions about this information or need assistance with your child's school attendance.

HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD?

  • Let your child know that you think school is important.
  • Make sure your child goes to school regularly and on time. Don't make them late.
  • Take an interest in your child's school work. If they are absent, make sure they do all the make-up work immediately after returning to school.
  • Provide regular times and a quiet, clean area for doing homework
  • Set a regular bedtime schedule. Age should not be a factor.
  • Provide your child with plenty of time to get ready for school. Wake him/her up if necessary.
  • If your child starts to miss school, speak to the school and let your child know that he/she may receive a failing grade if absences become excessive (10 or more).
  • Students who are truant from school may be required to make up the time during non-school hours such as on Saturday.
  • Consult the school nurse or your doctor if illness becomes frequent or severe.
  • Communication with the school is important. The school is required by law to send you a letter when your child has excessive absences.
  • If your child is absent, contact the school's attendance office within 48 hours and explain the reason for the absence. By state law, absences can only be excused for illness, medical/dental appointment, funeral, or a justifiable personal reason approved by the principal.
  • Don't expect your older children to stay home and act as babysitters for younger children.
  • Set good examples and enforce rules.
  • Include regular exercise and a balanced diet in your child's daily activities.
  • Post the school calendar and notes on the refrigerator or another prominent location.
  • Limit and balance extracurricular activities.
  • Keep open communication lines with your child.

According to state law,

  • You and your child can be referred to a School Attendance Review Board (SARB) hearing if your child has excessive or unexcused absences. The SARB can require a Doctor's note for all future absences due to illness.

  • La Mesa Directiva de Revisión de Asistencia Escolar (SARB, por sus siglas en inglés) fue establecida por la asamblea legislativa de California en 1975 con el propósito de hacer un mejor esfuerzo para alcanzar las necesidades de los estudiantes con problemas de asistencia o de conducta y promover el uso de alternativas al sistema judicial juvenil. El SARB busca el entender la razón por la cual el estudiante está teniendo problemas de asistencia o de conducta, y al mismo tiempo sirve como un vehículo para corregir dichos problemas cuando los recursos tanto escolares como comunitarios se han agotado. El SARB está encargado específicamente de encontrar las soluciones para estudiantes con problemas de asistencia y de conducta al reunir, siempre que sea posible, a los representantes de las múltiples agencias que hacen posible el panel del SARB. Los miembros del panel del SARB pueden incluir personal de: Centros de Recursos para Familias Un Comienzo Saludable, Personal del Programa para Menores en Espera de Adopción, Servicios para la Protección Infantil, Departamento de Educación del Condado de San Diego, Departamento de Libertad Condicional y otros departamentos de justicia como el Departamento del Aguacil, Departamento Policial y la Fiscalía.

    Estimados Padres de Familia,

    La comunidad de San Marcos reconoce el impacto positivo que la asistencia escolar tiene en el estudiante en sus logros académicos, por lo tanto nos mantendremos comprometidos en nuestros esfuerzos para mejorar el nivel escolar de nuestros alumnos.

    Recientemente hubo un cambio en la ley el cual afecta la manera en que las escuelas reciben fondos estatales. Es muy importante que usted comprenda la nueva ley y así nos ayude a mejorar la asistencia de su hijo(a) para que nuestra escuela reciba el máximo financiamiento posible.

    Las escuelas ya no reciben fondos por faltas justificadas, nuestra escuela solo recibe fondos por los estudiantes que se presentan en las aulas. Cada día que pierde de escuela un estudiante, aun siendo falta justificada, nuestra escuela pierde $45 en financiamiento el cual equivale a dos libros en nuestra biblioteca. Les solicitamos nos ayuden a mejorar la asistencia de nuestros estudiantes de la siguiente forma:

    • Planee sus vacaciones familiares durante el verano o días festivos
    • Procure hacer citas con el médico después de horas escolares
    • Si su hijo(a) tiene citas con el médico durante horas escolares, tráigalo a la escuela antes o después de su cita.
    • Permita que su hijo(a) se quede en casa únicamente cuando tenga una enfermedad contagiosa o se encuentre muy enfermo como para no sentirse cómodo en clase.

    Recuerde que la buena asistencia no sólo beneficia a nuestra escuela, sino también beneficia a su hijo(a). Cada día de perdido de escuela, nuestro estudiante se atrasa dos días de enseñanza, ya que debe recuperar trabajos perdidos y al mismo tiempo obtener nueva información. Cada día que el estudiante se presenta en la clase, sus oportunidades de mejorar en sus exámenes aumenta. La asistencia es muy importante para lograr nuestra misión y necesitamos el apoyo de los padres de familia.

    Sabemos que usted desea lo mejor para su hijo(a), y nosotros también. Si tiene alguna duda o necesita apoyo con la asistencia de su hijo(a) favor de comunicarse a la oficina de su escuela.

    ¿CÓMO PUEDE AYUDAR A SU HIJO?

    • Hágale saber a su hijo que la escuela es importante.
    • Asegúrese que su hijo(a) asista a la escuela diariamente y a tiempo. No haga que su hijo (a) llegue tarde.
    • Tome interés en las tareas de su hijo(a). Si falta a clases, asegúrese que al regresar a la escuela su hijo (a) haga toda su tarea inmediatamente.
    • Asígnele un horario y un lugar limpio y callado para realizar sus tareas.
    • Asígnele una hora apropiada para dormir, la edad no debe ser un factor.
    • Provéale con tiempo suficiente para preparase para ir a la escuela. Si es necesario, despierte a su hijo (a).
    • Si su hijo (a) empieza a faltar a la escuela, hable con la escuela y explíquele a su hijo (a) que pudiera recibir calificaciones bajas si tiene faltas en exceso (10 o más).
    • Los alumnos quienes no asisten a la escuela puede ser que se les requiera que recuperen el tiempo durante tiempo fuera de la escuela como en los sábados.
    • Consulte con la enfermera de la escuela o su doctor si su hijo (a) se enferma con frecuencia.
    • Mantenga una comunicación constante con la escuela. La ley requiere que la escuela le mande una carta cuando su hijo (a) tenga faltas excesivas.
    • Si su hijo (a) falta a clases, contacte a la oficina de asistencia de la escuela dentro de las primeras 48 horas y explique la razón de la ausencia. De acuerdo con la ley estatal, las faltas solamente pueden ser justificadas por enfermedad, citas médicas o del dentista, funeral o una razón personal justificada que sea aprobada por el director (a).
    • No deje a su hijo (a) mayor cuidando a los hermanos pequeños en vez de asistir a las escuela.
    • Déle un buen ejemplo e imponga reglas.
    • Incluya ejercicio regular y una dieta balanceada en las actividades diarias de su hijo (a).
    • Coloque el calendario escolar en el refrigerador o en un lugar pertinente.
    • Mantenga las actividades extracurriculares en balance.
    • Mantenga las líneas de comunicación abiertas con su hijo (a).
    • De acuerdo con la ley estatal, usted y su hijo (a) pueden ser remitidos al Comité de Revisión de Asistencia Escolar para una audiencia si su hijo (a) tiene faltas excesivas. El Comité puede requerir una nota del doctor para todas las faltas que haya en el futuro debido a una enfermedad.
