
Lourdes Hernandez
Executive Director
Lourdes Hernandez began her career in educational business services back in 1990 and joined Team SMUSD with nearly 30 years of experience in school finance and business administration. Prior to working in the education sector, Lourdes spent time developing her skills and expertise in the private sector. Her work in education finance and business administration includes budget development and oversight, accounting and budgeting for categorical programs, payroll and nutrition services oversight, SACS reporting, Associated Student Body oversight, cash flow, and multi-year projections.
While working as the Executive Director of Fiscal Services at Vista Unified School District, Lourdes lead a team that launched an innovative position control system to ensure the district was accurately budgeting for and tracking all positions. She was also instrumental in implementing budget solutions to address declining enrollment and increasing pension costs in order to maintain fiscal solvency. In 2019, she transitioned to her current position as Executive Director of Finance at San Marcos Unified School District. Lourdes is a California native and enjoys spending her free time with family and friends.
Department Responsibilities
The Accounting and Payroll departments manage the District's budget, accounts receivable and payable, general ledger, fixed assets, and payroll activities. They develop, monitor, and update all District program budgets and prepare all state and federal reports for general fund and categorical program activities. The office directly supports all District schools and departments. Finance and Accounting is also responsible for the successful preparation of District accounting records for the annual audit.
Department Goals
Our Finance Department professionals provide accurate record-keeping to ensure District assets are maximized to their fullest potential. Operating in a manner to certify compliance with all Local, State, and Federal regulations that impact the financial status of the District is a top priority. Our focus is to provide Administration and our Governing Board with accurate and timely financial data to support decisions that directly impact our students. Our major areas of responsibility include: Budgeting, Payroll, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Financial Analysis, Reporting, and General Accounting.
Payroll Notices and Information
Payroll Check Availability - All Checks to be Mailed
- All Employee Payroll Physical Checks (no direct deposit paystubs) will be mailed. Arrangements must be made prior to payday for in-person check pickups. If there are any Payroll related questions, please email [email protected].
Address Change
If the address on your Payroll Warrant envelope is NOT your current address, please complete a Change in Personnel Payroll Records form, and submit it to Payroll.
Investments
403b, 457b, and Roth 403b investments are available to all district employees.
