San Elijo Middle School Recognized as 2026 California Distinguished School

SAN MARCOS, CA — San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD) is proud to announce that San Elijo Middle School has been named a 2026 California Distinguished School, one of the state’s most prestigious honors for public schools.
Presented by the California Department of Education, the California Distinguished Schools Program celebrates schools that demonstrate exceptional student achievement and success in closing opportunity gaps.
San Elijo Middle School earned recognition in the category of Achievement Gap Closers, which honors schools that are accelerating academic progress for historically underserved student groups while maintaining strong academic outcomes for all students.
“San Elijo Middle School’s recognition as a California Distinguished School reflects the intentional work happening across the campus to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed,” said San Marcos Unified Superintendent Dr. Andy Johnsen. “Closing achievement gaps while maintaining strong outcomes for all students requires focus, collaboration, and a deep commitment to learning. The San Elijo community continues to demonstrate what is possible when those efforts come together.”
The California Distinguished Schools Program highlights schools that implement innovative instructional practices, strong support systems for students, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Schools are selected based on performance data from the California School Dashboard, the state’s accountability system for public schools.
“This recognition reflects the dedication our students, staff, and families bring to San Elijo Middle School every day,” said Principal Patricia Storey. “Our team is intentional about creating a learning environment where students feel supported, challenged, and excited to learn.”
San Elijo Middle School will be formally honored during the California School Recognition Program Awards Ceremony hosted by the California Department of Education on April 24, 2026, at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.
The California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes schools in alternating cycles. In 2026, middle schools and high schools across California were eligible for consideration.
